Last week’s overview and 30 March 2020 assignment:
Thoughts on assignment from last week.
First and foremost, I have to say that 99% took this assignment the right way and really tried to learn from Washington’s correspondence. Great work!
This assignment was focused on President Washington and primary source materials concerning several issues that were at the forefront during his Presidency. While not all, they were some of the more interesting issues.
He was the first President and he was very mindful that everything he did would set a precedent for the future. The writings selected were tough to read because they were written in the 18
th Century, but each had a purpose.
If you decided to simply cut and paste from one answer to another because you thought that, since the questions were the same, the answers must be the same or to write that it shows what he did, does not tell me or you that you understood what he was trying to say. In the end, you cheat yourself out of some very interesting thoughts. The problems with the Whiskey Rebellion, the proclamation of Neutrality, Religious freedom, and accession to the presidency itself were all individual issues worthy of reflection and comment for each individually. That was all I asked of you: your reflection.
His Farewell Address is of significance to setting the path for the country, too bad they didn’t listen to his sage advice.
As you go through life, regardless of what you decide to do, you will be asked to provide your opinion and part of that is to provide a defense for that opinion based on facts.
Always be able to defend the position you take with evidence. The use of quotes is one way, but those quotes should not become the answer, they should support what you believe.
Let’s move forward and learn from this.
I really do miss you all, especially the 41 not on the hangout.

MARCH 16, 2020 LESSON: AMENDMENTS 11-12
I need to make a correction on the 11th Amendment: Citizens of other states and Foreigners from other countries cannot sue states. Citizens of a state CAN SUE THEIR OWN STATE! BUT, there are questions about that. It seems states can refuse the suit if the case is based on Federal law. The Chisem v. Georgia case concerned non-payment of goods during the Revolutionary War
the Civil War and Chisem was from South Carolina. Sorry about the confusion.
